Geetanjali A. Akerkar MD

Dr. Akerkar is a fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association and a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and the Massachusetts Gastroenterology Association.
In 2021, she was named Community Clinician of the Year by the Middlesex North District chapter of the Massachusetts Medical Society, an honor voted on by her peers. She was also recognized by Boston Magazine and Castle Connolly Medical Ltd as a Top Doctor in 2017/2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023.
Dr. Akerkar is perceptive, compassionate and instructive, and says she was inspired to become a Gastroenterologist because disorders in Gastroenterology often detect imbalances in the body. “As a physician in this area I must consider multiple organ systems, which I enjoy,” says Dr. Akerkar. “I also can help patients with many different types of conditions – an infection such as Hepatitis C, autoimmune disease such as Crohn’s disease, or detection of a precancerous condition such as Barrett’s esophagus or an adenomatous colon polyp. This is extremely rewarding.”
What is Dr. Akerkar’s care philosophy?
“To understand, diagnose and empower my patients.”
Outside of work, Dr. Akerkar enjoys traveling, playing tennis and spending time with her family.
